Privacy Policy

Atavist is committed to preserving the privacy of its readers and users. This policy outlines the handling of users’ personal information that is submitted at any point in the site. The information is used only in the ways specified when it was collected. That information is not shared in any other shape or manner otherwise.

Consent

By using our web site and mobile apps you consent to the use of your personal information as described in this Privacy and Data Policy. Except as set forth in this policy, your personal information will not be used for any other purpose without your consent. We will not actively collect personal Information for the purpose of sale or marketing in a way that specifically identifies the individual. In other words, we don’t sell customer lists. You may withdraw your consent to our processing of your personal information at any time. However, withdrawing consent may result in your inability to continue using our web site, apps, and/or other services.

Types and uses of personal information

In order to purchase a story or subscription from The Atavist Magazine or create content on Atavist, you must first create an account with a username and password. The registration system requires a valid email address, used to confirm the account. Accounts are backed up regularly, if the user changes the information on his or her account, Atavist’s stored data backups may include the user’s original information for up to six months. Separately, when any Atavist administrators are emailed, the addresses and correspondence are retained. This information is saved to respond to issues and inquiries of all types.

Credit card information

For collecting payments for purchase of Atavist stories, we utilize the payment processing service Stripe, which stores all credit cards securely. Atavist does not store any user credit card information on our own servers.

Aggregate Data Collection on Reading Habits

The Atavist application on iOS, Android, and other devices, as well as the Atavist web reader, may collect certain non-personally identifiable information, such as how you read and which multimedia components you take advantage of. This data is stored securely on our servers and is used to enable us to understand broad trends in how people are reading and utilizing our content, in order to better serve our readers.

If you prefer that the Atavist app not collect any anonymized information about your reading habits in our iOS apps, you can go to Settings->Apps->The Atavist->Disable Analytics Data Collection, and turn it off.

Aggregate Data Collection on Atavist Feature Usage

Atavist may collect certain non-personally identifiable information on the users of Atavist, such as how many stories you create and publish, and which features you use. This data is stored securely on our servers and is used to enable us to understand broad trends in how people are creating content in our system, in order to better serve our readers.

Mailing list

If you send us your email address to be added to our list, we will not share it with anyone outside of Atavist Inc. We use email addresses only to send occasional updates on our latest stories from The Atavist Magazine or news about Atavist, features, and stories that we think our readers might be interested in.

Information sharing

Aggregated reading and demographic information about our audience may be shared with third parties, including browser information and traffic statistics. This data is not tied to any individual readers’ accounts or personally identifiable information.

Personally identifiable information:

No personally identifiable information is shared with third parties, with limited exceptions, namely: We reserve the right to access, preserve, and disclose any information as we reasonably believe is necessary, in our sole discretion, to (i) satisfy any law, regulation, legal process, governmental request, or governmental order, (ii) enforce this Privacy Policy and our Terms of Service, including investigation of potential violations hereof, (iii) detect, prevent, or otherwise address fraud, security, trust and safety, or technical issues (including exchanging information with other companies and organizations for the purposes of improving security and preventing fraud, spam, and malware), (iv) respond to user support requests, or (v) protect the rights, property, health or safety of us, our users, any third parties or the public in general, including but not limited to situations involving possible violence, suicide, or self-harm.

We believe in freedom of expression, and, to the extent reasonable, we will try to protect our community from baseless legal demands.

Cookies

A cookie is a small text file that is stored on a user’s computer for record-keeping purposes. Atavist uses cookies on this site. Some of the information stored in cookies is sometimes linked to readers’ accounts.

Atavist uses both short-term cookies and persistent cookies. A short-term cookie expires within a limited period of time. Session cookies are used so that readers with accounts can navigate Atavist without logging in multiple times over a short period of time. A persistent cookie remains on the user’s hard drive for an extended period of time. Persistent cookies are used to recognize account holders and present the site accordingly. Users can remove cookies by following directions provided in your Internet browser’s “help” file.
